Jay Rutland: The Art He Is Collecting This Month and Why

Maddox Creative Director Jay Rutland is always adding to his personal art collection. Here he shares what he is buying in February, and the reasons why.

Roy Lichtenstein

I have always admired the work of Roy Lichtenstein but never actually added one of his works to my personal collection. This month that is going to change, and I have my eye on a couple of pieces. When I am looking to buy an artwork, I ask myself two questions. Firstly, is it art that I love? And secondly, is it a good investment? Roy Lichtenstein certainly ticks both boxes. Following the 100th anniversary of his birth last year,  2024 is set to be a significant year for Lichtenstein's market and I’m planning on visiting the Albertina Museum in Vienna next month to see their retrospective of his work. I am also excited to hear that the Whitney Museum of American Art will be holding a retrospective of this Pop Art great in 2026.

Will Martyr

At Maddox, we have hosted two wonderful exhibitions of Will Martyr's work, and his popularity just continues to grow. Depicting singular moments of escapism, I especially love his alpine-themed works which are perfect for the winter ski season and beyond. I already own a selection of his works, and I’m currently coveting another piece for our family chalet in Gstaad.

Moritz Moll

We just opened the show 'The Grand Finale', a solo show of Moritz Moll's work, at our gallery in Gstaad. A Munich-based painter who is inspired by experiences and memories from his childhood, I love Moritz’s intimate portraits and his wonderful colour palette. His work reminds me in many ways of Alex Katz, an artist I also collect, and I’m eager to see how Moritz’s ski-themed works are received in Gstaad.

Cooper

Here at Maddox, we’ve enjoyed a fantastic relationship with Cooper in recent years after discovering him on Instagram. After two sell-out solo exhibitions, Cooper is now back in London as Artist in Residence at Shepherd Market until June when the culmination of his work will then be exhibited at our Berkeley Street Gallery. I love his new stunning floral canvases and anticipate a long waiting list for these. We invite Maddox clients and art enthusiasts to visit our Shepherd Market gallery to see him live in action.

Iván Montaña

We just opened the new group exhibition 'Supernatural' at our Berkeley Street Gallery in London, and there is a particular featured artist called Iván Montaña who has really caught my eye. An up-and-coming young artist from Spain, his use of colour is wonderful - vibrant, positive and full of energy. I've always been a fan of art that makes you want to examine every aspect and that's how I feel when I look at Iván’s work. I have big expectations for this artist and I’m delighted he’s exhibiting with Maddox for the first time.
