Neon Caron art is a reflection of his inner child

Neon Caron is a Mexican artist, otherwise known as Jaime Shelley, born in Mexico City in 1984. After a successful career as an entrepreneur, he went on to study digital media and began his journey towards becoming a self-taught artist in 2011.

Experimenting with painting and urban art forms such as graffiti and stencilling, he quickly moved on to interactive digital artwork which quickly earned him industry renown.

However, he takes elements of nostalgia with him in the form of cartoon characters. Kitsch characters such as Mickey Mouse and Felix the Cat bring a childlike quality to his work, and link the new technology of augmented reality with recognised and much-loved imagery.

“My pieces are a reflection of myself, of my attitude regarding my circumstances. They are a mirror of my inner child –the one that doesn’t mind criticism, rejection, or disapproval. I paint confidently and without fear” – Neon Caron

Using technology to bring art to life

Neon Caron art explores new forms of communication such as augmented reality. As one might expect from a technology enthusiast, the artist has his own mobile app which allows users to access the augmented reality of his works.

Once downloaded, the app can be held up in front of Neon Caron artworks to see a moving image, placing his work in a new art movement where painting and technology meet.

Traditionally used in marketing and advertising as an innovative way to connect with customers and drive engagement, augmented reality can help to create an emotional connection with the viewer.

In a similar vein, Caron was inspired to use augmented reality technology to allow his images to gain a life of their own, and literally reach out and connect with their audience.

As telecommunications become a huge part of our everyday lives, Neon Caron art incorporates personal devices into the traditional medium of painting, taking his works into the 21st century and capturing the attention of digital natives.

“The idea was to put a spirit in the picture, that there is something in the work that is not visible to the naked eye, and that through a telephone or device you can appreciate the true interpretation of what I want to capture” – Neon Caron
